Performance Practice
Open to all comers, with or without previous experience in the Alexander Technique.
A 3 hour zoom workshop conducted on-line with a ten minute break halfway on
Saturday 9 May 2020, 2:00pm to 5:00pm UK time.

You can perform Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto in front of a thousand people . . . and you can perform a small act of kindness that goes unnoticed by most people. Both types of performance are manifestations of your sense of agency: the innate capacity to make a decision and act upon it. Sensing and understanding how natural it is to perform will help you in every sphere of life: talking to friends and family; providing services such as lessons, workshops, and speeches; playing a musical instrument, singing, dancing, or acting; and otherwise expressing yourself in the world-that-is-a-stage.

Consider this a workshop with two themes. The primary one is practising the art of performance, as announced. The secondary one is learning how to use digital tools to communicate, listen, talk, play games, and have a good time. Adapting our minds to the digital give-and-take, we’ll acquire a few new work habits that will come in handy in all our personal and professional endeavours. During the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to practise every exercise in on-screen groups of two, three, and four participants.

The workshop will be conducted on the Zoom platform and will compise the main whole group session and breakout 'zoom rooms' within it. Anyone with no experience of the technology involved will be guided through the startup process by HITE in advance of the session. Pedro has experience of running successful and much appreciated workshops in this way.

It is for everyone: extroverts and introverts, professionals and amateurs, Alexander teachers and students, the curious and the doubtful. It doesn’t require any previous training, and it doesn’t require that you perform formally in front of the group.

Pedro de Alcantara is a musician, writer, and teacher. His books include, among others, Indirect Procedures: A Musician’s Guide to the Alexander Technique; Integrated Practice: Coordination, Rhythm & Sound; and The Integrated String Player, all published by Oxford University Press. www.pedrodealcantara.com

Please book early to avoid disappointment as places will be limited even though it is on zoom.

Please note that no refunds will be possible after 25th Apr 2020.

All participants will receive an electronic record of attendance after the event.
